Germanys Martin Kaymer proved himself to be a genuine contender for the forthcoming Open Championship by winning the 2009 Scottish Open at Loch Lomond on Sunday.
The German carded a final round 69 to finish the tournament two shots clear of overnight leader Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, who finished tied with Raphael Jacquelin of France for second place.
The win was Kaymers second on the European Tour in two weeks, with the German having clinched the French Open the previous weekend. Kaymer is the first player since Ian Woosnam in the 1990s to win both events ahead of the British Open.
“Everyone asks me about the third win in a row,” Kaymer said to the BBC after the win. “We are playing a major next week. And the field is going to be the best we have all year long. After last week and this week, I feel really good, my game is solid, so hopefully, I can keep it up.”
Following the victory Kaymers odds were cut to 28/1 in the Open Championship betting markets by Paddy Power. Kaymer is now priced amongst the top 6 contenders at the tournament.
