Rampant Goosen takes lead at Scottish Open

South Africa’s Retief Goosen blew away the opposition at Loch Lomond on Friday, hitting a round of 63 to take a 2 shot lead at the top of the Scottish Open leaderboard.

Goosen’s round came within a shot of his own course record, and left him 2 shots ahead of Adam Scott, who carded as round of 66. Marcus Fraser and Martin Kaymer were tied for third a shot further back.

Goosen was delighted with a solid performance that comes just weeks after he achieved a 3rd place tie at the Munich Open. The South African’s form marks him as a serious contender for the forthcoming British Open.

“In Munich I was there after nine holes but struggled on the back nine,” Goosen told the AFP. “Hopefully I can have the same chance on Sunday here. All you can do is keep giving yourself chances. You go through patches and nobody knows why. My putting is not as consistent as it used to be but today they all went in, which is nice.”

Lee Westwood would also have been pleased with his performance on Friday, as the Englishman overcame a chest infection to card a round of 66 and easily make the cut going into the weekend.
