Green leads after first round

Australia’s Richard Green emerged at the top of the pack after the first day of the 2009 Scottish Open on Thursday, hitting an impressive round of 64 to open up a 1 shot lead at the top of the tournament leaderboard.

Ireland’s Paul McGinley and Spain’s Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano finished the day in second place, while Scottish fans also had something to cheer about as Martin Laird completed a 3-way tie for second place.

“There have been a lot of opportunities for me where I’ve not handled the pressure as well as I would have liked, but the more I put myself there, the more I feel I can do it,” Green said at the end of the day’s play. “It was a great round of golf, I was very much under control.

“I love this place. I remember the first time I came here in 1996, I finished joint sixth. Today was very easy for us and it seemed very easy for me.”

Green finished the 2008 Scottish Open tied for third place, and welcomed a return to form ahead of the 2009 British Open after having missed the cut in his last 11 tournaments.

Some of the bigger names in the field didn’t have much to crow about at the end of the first round, with defending champion Graeme McDowell finishing the day 6 shots off the pace, while an ill Lee Westwood could only manage a score of 73.
