Els seeks spark at Loch Lomond

Ernie Els is hoping to reverse a steep decline in fortune on the PGA Tour by putting in a good performance at the Scottish Open this week. The former world number one, now touching on 40, dropped out of the PGA Tour’s top 20 this week.

The Scottish Open has previously been a happy hunting ground for Els, who has taken two titles at Loch Lomond. The South African is hoping that a return to familiar and friendly surroundings will provide him with a spark that will re-ignite his ailing career.

“Having played Loch Lomond for so many years there are no real surprises in store for me, but in this case it’s a nice kind of familiarity. The place definitely suits my eye,” Els told The Times this week. “I’ve mostly done pretty well here, having won twice and had a bunch of other top-10 finishes.”

“To be honest, it’s probably my favourite two weeks on the golfing calendar. No, make that definitely my favourite two weeks.”

Els dismissed the notion that the course at Loch Lomond provides inadequate preparation for the links courses used for the Open Championship. The difference in course conditions has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years, with players pointing out that no Scottish Open champion has ever gone on to win the British Open.

“I know some players have a problem playing a golf course as lush as this, with it being such a contrast to links golf and just the week before the British,” Els told The Times. “But I’ve never seen that as much of an issue.”
