Favourites struggle in 2008 Scottish Open

Posted on by godadnet

Despite featuring a stellar field, it was two virtually unknown players who accelerated into an early lead on the first day of the 2008 Scottish Open. At the end of the first day of play Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand and Alexander Noren of Sweden shared the tournament lead at 7 under.

Jaidee’s performance was particularly remarkable, as the former Thai paratrooper came back from missing the cut in two of his last three European PGA Tour events to shoot a round of 64, scoring 7 birdies along the way.

Co-leader Noren, a former Swedish amateur international player, also bounced back from indifferent form to hit a series of birdies on the final nine holes to join Jaidee at the top of the leaderboard.

US Open winner Angel Cabrera put in the best performance of the favourites in the first round, scoring a round of 65 to position himself well within striking distance of the tournament leaders.

However the day was not a good one for top 100 golfers, as the likes of Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, and Adam Scott all failed to break par on the first day of the tournament.

Scottish fans will have been happy with the performance of veteran golfer Colin Montgomerie, who shot a round of 69 to keep his 2008 Scottish Open title hopes alive.
