One of England’s big hopes for the 2008 Open Championship, Luke Donald, has pulled out of this week’s Scottish Open after sustaining an injury to his wrist.

30 year old Donald picked up the injury in the final round of last month’s US Open, and is now in a race against time to reach fitness for the 2008 Open Championship. Donald’s absence from the 2008 Scottish Open is disappointing given that he achieved a top five finish in Loch Lomond last year.

Prior to the 2008 Scottish Open Donald had already missed out on a couple of big European tournaments, including the BMW International and the French Open. His absence from the game has seen him slide down the European Ryder Cup rankings, where he is presently positioned in 39th place.

“Luke’s been speaking to specialists and is almost ready to resume playing, but as a precautionary measure he’s going to give it one more week,” commented European Director of Golf, Guy Kinnings.

Other players set to miss out on the 2008 Scottish Open include South Africa’s David Frost and Germany’s Martin Kaymer. The tournament nevertheless boasts one of its strongest fields in decades.
