Rocco Mediate joined Phil Mickelson as the second high profile player to enter the Scottish Open this week.
While the Scottish Open is a European PGA Tour event, players from the North American PGA Tour are able to qualify for and participate in the event, and tend to do so in the hopes of getting the measure of their opponents and British conditions before heading to the Open Championship.
Mediates entry into the Scottish Open is something of a coup for the tournament, given the high levels of interest in Mediates game since he pushed Tiger Woods to a playoff in the 2008 US Open. Had Mediate not lost his nerve and pulled two crucial shots, he may well have walked away from the US Open as champion.
Traditionally PGA players have preferred pre-Open Championship tournaments held in Ireland to the Scottish Open, in the belief that Irish links more closely resemble the links used for the Open Championship.
However this year fans of the European PGA Tour can look forward to seeing a number of high profile players from both tours in action, including Open favourite Ernie Els, Adam Scott, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie.
